but anteaters are designed to eat ants, so they probably have a special way to make sure that doesn’t happen. bowie picked up the food, carried it across the room, put it down, then picked it up and ate it. that would have given them plenty of time to crawl around on/ in him before he actually swallowed anything.
that being said, hours later (and ever since) his ear has been really sensitive, and his mouth has seemed fine. so probably one/ some crawled off the food and bit his ear.

I severely doubt that ants are biting inside his throat. Otherwise anteaters would be in constant pain.
